De Prael Willeke

Brouwerij De Prael Willeke Tripel

I got to try a few ales on a recent trip to Amsterdam. The first one was at Fifteen Restaurant where we had lunch on the first day. To get into the Dutch beer mood, I chose a “Belgian Style” Tripel beer, the Willeke from the De Prael Brouwerij of Amsterdam. It’s a dark gold colored ale with small compact bubbles on top. It has a light pilsner mouthfeel with citrus flavors and a strange end note that lingers. I will have to rematch with this one again to give her another chance. Maybe in a line up of De Prael beers next time at their brewery.

Duvel Tripel Hop 2013

Duvel Tripel Hop 2013 Sorachi Ace

The Duvel Tripel Hop 2013 pours a cloudy light-yellow topped by a fluffy head. It contains a nose of fresh pine and lime. I almost missed the slight sweet start because it’s quickly overpowered by a resign-floral bitterness, light lime, some spices, and a lingering long aftertaste. This years Tripel Hop 2013 is showcasing the Sorachi Ace hops imparting the pine/resign flavors, which I am not the biggest fan of. If you like a resign kind of hop character, you should try it for sure. The Tripel Hop 2012 with Citra Hops is more to my liking.

Ommegang Keizer Karel Charles Quint by Brouwerij Haacht

Ommegang Keizer Karel Charles Quint tripel beer

First time at this old Antwerpen bar and first time having the Ommegang Keizer Karel. As a tripel its a very easy beer to drink. You don’t notice the 8% abv and its not as harsh as a Duvel per say. Not the most memorable ale but will try it again, probably in combination with more Brouwerij Haacht beers and due to the higher availability of this beer.

Oud Beersel Bersalis Tripel

A favorite tripel or triple of mine comes from just south of Brussels. In the little town of Beersel, Belgium are two great breweries. Oud Beersel, along with making good lambic based beers, brews the Bersalis Tripel. Although having a lot of alcohol, this is a great beer. If you need a lighter version try the Bersalis Kadet. If you are in brussels and have access to a car I would recommend taking an early day trip to Beersel to visit Oud Beersel brewery and 3 Fonteinen (the other Beersel brewery).

Jambe de Bois by Brasserie de la Senne

Belgian beer is well known for the strong blonds called tripel or triple. I really enjoy a good tripel and one of my go to beers when I find it is the Jambe de Bois brewed in Brussels by the Brasserie de la Senne. A big supporter of small/local businesses I would recommend trying one. Although Zinebir and Taras Bulba are going to be easier to find, this one is more my beer.
